About Us

Giant Onyx became fully operational by forming a 501 3 in April of 2010. Giant Onyx was formed to assist our community with at risk youth and adults by providing college scholarships, mentorship programs, and community involvement.Giant Onyx leadership event

These programs were implemented to address the needs of the community in at risk areas. Our mission is to be a family unit full, prosperous and cohesive, committed to ethical values and financial independence. We accomplish this through our mentorship programs, college scholarships, and community involvement. The members of Giant Onyx along with our community members elected an executive board to be the administrators of the organization and our community outreach programs. Giant Onyx is a volunteer organization with no paid positions at this time Giant Onyx’s Executive Staff is well qualified administrators in their professional lives as managers of the organizations they are employed by. Our community volunteers are equally qualified by being leaders in business ad community involvement.

In August of 1996, the adult men descendants of Floyd and Mercedes  Gammage began going on what would turn into an annual retreat to mentor, coach, and counsel each other. We recognized the need for such assistance in our community and decided to form a non-profit organization to meet that need.Gammages

Giant Onyx’s mentorship program will target youths aged twelve to adulthood. Our goal is to grow into an organization that services the needs of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Education has always been important to our family, thus the college scholarship was created to assist high school seniors going on to college. Each year we provide the high school councilors in the metro Phoenix area with scholarship applications via mail and email to solicit high school seniors to apply for the scholarships. All services that Giant Onyx offers to at risk youths is at no cost to the recipients. The scholarship board, made up of community leaders, teachers, and Giant Onyx members, interview the students, and work with them at a couple of community events to select the winners of the scholarship. Giant Onyx has given out over 50 college scholarships to at risk youth ranging from $100 to $1,000.

The scholarship winners are announced each year at our annual golf tournament at the Legacy Golf Club and Resort in Phoenix. To make our Giant Onyx Golf event 5th annual recipientsscholarship program a lasting legacy in the Phoenix area, we are currently looking into starting an endowment at the three Universities in Arizona.

Giant Onyx members meet once a month to discuss fund raising, mentorship, scholarships, and community involvement activities. Funding the organization is strictly by fund raising, corporate sponsorship, and private donations. Our major expenses are for scholarships, and mentorship activities.

As an organization, we strive to make positive changes happen in our community. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we seek.”
